How to Find and Verify a Reliable Clothing Manufacturer (2026 Checklist)

To find a reliable clothing manufacturer, verify four things before you send any money: that the factory is a real manufacturer (not a trading company), that it holds valid social and quality certifications, that it can prove production of your exact product category, and that it puts MOQ, lead times and pricing in writing. Most sourcing disasters come from skipping one of these four checks — not from bad luck.

Huaxing Apparel is a BSCI and ISO 9001 certified manufacturer in Dongguan, China, producing custom streetwear for brands worldwide since 2016. This guide is the checklist we would use ourselves — including the questions that separate real factories from middlemen.

Factory vs Trading Company: How to Tell the Difference

Both can deliver goods, but a trading company adds a margin and a layer between you and production. Neither is inherently bad — but you should know which one you are talking to.

Signal Real manufacturer Trading company
Product range Focused (e.g. knitwear / streetwear) Very broad — hoodies, shoes, bags, electronics
Factory video call Can walk you through the sewing floor live Reschedules, sends stock photos, or shows a “partner factory”
Technical answers Discusses GSM, shrinkage, stitch density directly Needs to “check with the factory” first
Certifications Audit reports in the factory’s own name Certificates belong to a third party

The quickest test: ask for a live video walkthrough of the production line during working hours, and ask a specific technical question mid-call. A real factory answers on the spot.

The Certifications That Actually Matter

  • BSCI (amfori) — a social compliance audit covering working conditions, hours and safety. Increasingly required by EU and UK retailers.
  • ISO 9001 — certifies a documented quality management system, which is what makes consistency repeatable across orders.
  • OEKO-TEX / GOTS — material-level certifications. Relevant if you market organic or chemically-tested fabrics; usually held by the fabric mill rather than the garment factory.

Always ask for the certificate with its number and validity date, and check that the company name on it matches the company you are invoicing. We hold BSCI and ISO 9001 and share both on request.

10 Questions to Ask Before You Commit

  1. What is your MOQ per style and per colorway?
  2. Are you the manufacturer, and can we video call your production floor?
  3. Which certifications do you hold, and in whose name?
  4. What is your sample lead time and sample cost?
  5. What is your bulk lead time after sample approval?
  6. What fabrics and GSM range do you produce regularly?
  7. What decoration methods do you handle in-house vs outsource?
  8. How do you handle quality control, and at which stages?
  9. What are your payment terms and accepted methods?
  10. Which trade terms do you quote — FOB, EXW or DDP?

A good supplier answers all ten in one reply, in writing. Vague answers at this stage become disputes later.

Red Flags Worth Walking Away From

  • Prices far below every other quote — usually means lighter fabric, lower stitch density or hidden costs added later.
  • Refusal to make a sample — no legitimate factory ships bulk without an approved pre-production sample.
  • Vague MOQ — “any quantity is fine” often turns into surprise surcharges after you commit.
  • No written quote — if MOQ, price, lead time and terms are not in a document, they are not agreed.
  • Personal bank account payment requests — legitimate factories invoice to a company account matching their registered name.

Sampling: Your Cheapest Insurance

A sample costs a fraction of a bulk order and tells you almost everything: whether they read your tech pack, whether their workmanship matches their claims, and how they communicate under pressure. Our sampling takes 7–12 days, and how a factory handles the sample stage is the single best predictor of how bulk will go. Read our cost guide for typical sample pricing.

Start Small, Then Scale

You do not have to bet your first collection on an unproven supplier. Our 50-piece MOQ per style exists precisely so brands can run a real, low-risk trial order — full private label included — before committing to volume. See our MOQ guide for how small runs work in practice.

FAQ: Finding a Clothing Manufacturer

How do I know if a supplier is a real factory?

Ask for a live video walkthrough of the production floor during working hours and ask a technical question mid-call, such as the GSM and shrinkage of the fabric they propose. Real manufacturers answer immediately; middlemen need to check with someone else.

Which certifications should a clothing manufacturer have?

BSCI for social compliance and ISO 9001 for quality management are the two most requested by Western brands. Verify the certificate number, validity date and that the company name matches your supplier.

Is it safe to work with a Chinese clothing manufacturer?

Yes, when you verify properly: confirm the factory is real, check certifications, approve a physical sample before bulk, and pay a registered company account with written terms.

How much should I pay upfront?

A deposit plus balance structure is standard in apparel manufacturing, with exact terms agreed in writing on your quote before production starts.

What is the safest way to test a new manufacturer?

Place a small first order. With a 50-piece MOQ you can evaluate real production quality, communication and delivery performance before committing to larger volumes.
